Jordan’s response to coronavirus - By Rami Omar Haj-Hassan, The Jordan Times

Jordanians may espouse differing opinions in relation to domestic, regional and international political affairs. However, Jordanians remain united in their unwavering love, loyalty and support for the Hashemite Monarchy under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah. This remains true wherever you meet a Jordanian, whether in Europe, north America or in the Arabian Gulf.

This assessment is further supported by the remarkable sense of pride expressed by Jordanians, both domestically and abroad, at the kingdom's response toward the Corona Virus Pandemic, despite the deep economic impact to a critical majority of Jordanians, who have experienced a significant reduction in personal or business income, and in some cases, unprecedented financial losses. This comes even after facing several years of economic difficulties, coupled with anger and distrust with several cabinets and parliamentary representatives, which are healthy attributes.

As a family of five Jordanians living in the Arabian Gulf, who have not been able to return home since the outbreak of the Corona Virus Pandemic, we are in fact very proud that His Majesty King Abdullah has ordered appropriate measures to curtail the spread of the Corona Virus Pandemic in Jordan. We are even more proud of his majesty for his laudable support for a just, equitable, and durable solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Some may view the preventive measures adopted by Jordan as draconian. For many of us residing abroad however, we are deeply appreciative that Jordan has taken reasonable and effective measures to protect our relatives, friends and loved ones by using Jordan's beloved military to enforce lockdowns and curfews across the Kingdom as necessary.

On regional issues, His Majesty has consistently exerted pressure on European and international allies to block the unsavory efforts of Israel and the Netanyahu government to formally annex parts of the West Bank and Jordan Valley, despite being given the green light and the blessings of some in the Trump Administration.

Among its Arab brethren, the Kingdom of Jordan has often adopted a functionally moderate, balanced and neutral stance with respect to regional conflicts. It has often played a vital role in peaceful mediation efforts and in welcoming refugees from various regional conflicts, despite the Kingdom's limited economic resources.

In keeping with the traditional warmth and hospitality for which Hashemites and Jordanians are renowned, we were very much delighted to witness the historic visit of His Royal Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, to Jordan in February 2020. The visit on its own merits, strongly reaffirms the importance of the brotherly ties between Jordan and Qatar, but more importantly, it highlights the crucial role for Jordan and Qatar in supporting an independent and viable Palestinian State.

Jordan's intrinsic political capital safely rests within the hands of the Hashemites and His Majesty King Abdullah, the faithful custodians of Muslim and Christian Holy Sites in occupied East Jerusalem.
