AMMAN — The Amman Chamber of Commerce (ACC) Council on Sunday called for increasing Chinese investments in Jordan as the Kingdom offers several opportunities in many economic sectors.

During a meeting with Chinese Ambassador to Jordan Chen Chuandong, council members called for boosting Jordanian exports to China and expanding the production base, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The Kingdom’s exports to China in 2020 amounted to JD115 million, mainly fertilisers, copper scrap and cotton clothes while Jordan imported goods worth JD1.923 billion from China, Petra added.

The council also called for facilitating entry visas for Jordanian businesspeople and not to restrict them to those who received Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine.

ACC President Khalil Haj Tawfiq highlighted the importance of activating agreements and memoranda of understanding between the ACC and Chinese chambers of commerce and industry.

Haj Tawfiq noted that there are 14 Chinese partners registered at the chamber’s general assembly representing various commercial sectors, noting that China is the third biggest trade partner of Jordan after the US and Saudi Arabia.

For his part, the ambassador noted that the Kingdom is an important partner to his country and a safe and stable state in the Middle East, which qualifies it to serve as “a gateway” for Chinese products to neighbouring countries.

As for the condition of granting visas to recipients of the Sinopharm vaccine, the diplomat said that the procedure serves as facilitation for those who get inoculated with this vaccine.

Members of the chamber highlighted the importance of the Kingdom to benefit from Chinese expertise in the field of transferring modern technologies in the agricultural, ICT and electric appliances sectors, in addition to the possibility of granting scholarships to Jordanian youth in vocational education and training.
