AMMAN — The Australian embassy in Amman marked the 100th anniversary of the battle of Gallipoli in World War I and Australian-New Zealand Army Corp (ANZAC) Day at dawn on Saturday, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

ANZAC Day marks the two countries’ entrance into WWI and the sacrifices of Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women.

Australian and New Zealand troops landed on the beaches of Gallipoli in Turkey April 25, 1915 in an effort to conquer Istanbul.

ANZAC and Ottoman forces were quickly drawn into a stalemate that resulted in massive casualties before ANZAC forces eventually withdrew.

The failed attack on Ottoman forces claimed the lives of some 8,000 Australian and over 2,000 New Zealand troops.

HH Prince Mired, and diplomats and officers representing the countries that were involved in Gallipoli attended the ceremony.
