Polish Village Has Only-Girl Births Since 2010

Asharq Al-Awsat

A small Polish village, which has around 300 residents, is facing a problem that threatens its existence: all its babies born since 2010 are girls.

The trainee volunteer firefighting unit in the village is comprised of only girls. Because their number is increasing, girls are being trained from a young age to handle tasks that are usually assigned to men in the Polish countryside. Maja Golasz, the youngest firefighting trainee in the village, is just two-and-a-half-year old.

Maja's father and grandfather were both firefighters, and she would also go on to fight fires for a living, the young girl's mother told Reuters.

"There are no boys, so the women need to do the job," said one volunteer firefighter.

The lack of men didn't prevent women in the village from achieving their goals. Teenage volunteer firefighter Sabina Blama said "One of my dreams is, of course, getting a husband, but our main dream is to get a new fire engine."
