AMMAN — An opinion poll has revealed that 50 per cent of Jordanian intellectuals and opinion leaders read books in paper form, 12 per cent are e-readers, while 38 per cent read in both paper and digital forms.  

 

The results of the study, announced last week, was conducted by the Centre for Strategic Studies at the University of Jordan to survey interests of Jordanian intellectuals and opinion leaders in cultural priorities for the next 10 years to aid the Ministry of Culture.

 

During a press conference at the Royal Cultural Centre, Minister of Culture Bassem Tweissi said that the survey seeks to better understand the Kingdom’s cultural life, help formulate reform decisions and develop cultural policies on scientific bases.

 

Regarding the top five sources of cultural threats, 16 per cent of respondents believe that the most prominent source of threat to national cultural security is the government’s limited spending on culture, while 15 per cent regard globalisation, openness and cultural invasion as the most prominent threats, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

 

Ten per cent of the respondents said that ignorance and lack of awareness threaten national cultural security while 9 per cent hold the view that the misuse of social media is the main threat.
