AMMAN — The Cabinet on Tuesday endorsed the mandating reasons for the quality and consumer protection draft law for 2020, according to Minister of State for Media Affairs Amjad Adaileh.

The bill aims to guarantee the quality of national products, provide health and environment protection and public safety, preserve competition and prevent monopolies, Adaileh said during a press briefing at the Prime Ministry.

The Council of Ministers also approved the recommendations of the settlement and reconciliation committee related to settling pending cases between taxpayers and the Income and Sales Tax Department for 77 companies and individuals, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The procedure is part of the government’s efforts to curb tax evasion, enable taxpayers to pay their dues and alleviate financial burdens that accumulated as a result of failure to pay tax on time, according to Petra.

The Cabinet also agreed to include the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority in a decision to support the land transport sector, which included allowing payments of overdue amounts by companies and individuals over the past six months in installments and granting a one-month grace period for means of transport to renew licences without any fines.

The decision also stipulates increasing the operational age of the most affected modes of transport for one more year.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet approved the appointment of Laith Ajlouni as president of the Jordan Securities Commission, according to Petra.
