‘Jordan will not accept any compromise or deal that neglects Palestinians’ rights’

The Jordan Times

AMMAN — Prime Minister Omar Razzaz stressed on Sunday that Jordan, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah, supports Palestinians in facing the unilateral procedures of the Israeli occupation, noting that these practices violate all international laws.

The premier's remarks came during a one-on-one meeting with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh, followed by expanded talks attended by several ministers from both
countries.

Razzaz reiterated the Kingdom’s stance and commitment not to accept any compromise, project, deal or solution that neglects the Palestinians’ legitimate rights to end the occupation and establish their independent state on the pre-1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

“We cannot think of or accept an economic solution as an alternative or in isolation from a political solution to the issue,” Razzaz stressed.

He also emphasised that Jordan will never concede Jerusalem or the Hashemite Custodianship over the Islamic and Christian holy sites, expressing appreciation for Palestine and many countries for supporting the Kingdom’s historical role in this regard.

On the sidelines of the meeting, during which bilateral ties and the smeans to enhance them at all levels were discussed, Jordan and Palestine signed two memoranda of understanding on the mutual accreditation of conformity certificates and quality marks, and industrial ownership, and a third was signed between the Jordan Food and Drug Administration and the Palestinian Standards Institution.

In the presence of Razzaz and Shtayyeh, the minutes of the Jordanian-Palestinian ministerial meeting were also signed (see separate story).

The premier expressed confidence that such meetings would lead to implementing practical steps in all issues that were discussed previously by the technical committee in the energy, transport, commercial exchange and services, mainly health sectors.

For his part, Shtayyeh praised the Jordanian stance, under His Majesty’s leadership, that supports Palestinians in receiving their legitimate rights, at the top of which is the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

Shtayyeh stressed that Jordan is not merely a gateway for Palestinians, but it represents a bridge to Arabs and the world.

The Palestinian premier noted that this visit to the Kingdom is one step in Palestine’s strategy to “gradually break ties with the occupation and enhance the depth of Arab ties”.

He also expressed his gratitude for the Kingdom’s role in facilitating some 2.6 million trips across the King Hussein Bridge and 1.2 million trips for Palestinians through Queen Alia International Airport, as well as facilities presented to Hajj and umra performers.

In remarks to the press following the bilateral discussions, Razzaz said that Jordan and Palestine see eye-to-eye regarding the road to peace, which can only be realised through granting the Palestinian people their right to an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital and guaranteeing the refugees’ right to return.

At the economic level, he noted that there are economic challenges imposed by the occupation authorities, which hinder more commercial exchange between Jordan and Palestine.

The premier said that both countries put forward an executive plan to carry out the signed memos within weeks and months rather than within years.

For his part, Shtayyeh referred to the latest meeting between King Abdullah and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, during which His Majesty urged to put all Jordanian expertise and national products in the service of the Palestinian market.
