Man handed 12-year prison term for murder attempt

The Jordan Times

AMMAN — The Court of Cassation has upheld a January Criminal Court’s ruling sentencing a man to 12 years in prison after convicting him of attempting to murder a man in Amman in June 2018.

The court declared the defendant guilty of attempting to murder the victim by striking him with an iron bar on his head on June 27 and handed him the maximum sentence.

Court documents said the defendant and the victim were in the street with some friends when they engaged in a heated argument.

“The defendant grabbed an iron bar and struck the victim repeatedly on his head,” court documents said.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital and survived the incident because of medical intervention, the court transcripts said.

The Criminal Court’s general attorney had asked the higher court to uphold the ruling against the defendant.

The defendant contested the Criminal Court’s ruling arguing his conviction  was based on weak evidence.

The higher court, however, ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were accurate and correct and that the defendant was given the appropriate punishment.

The Cassation Court bench comprised judges Mohammad Ibrahim, Yassin Abdullat, Majid Azab, Hamad Ghzawi and Bassim Mubeidin.
