GAM adds 100 electric vehicles to fleet

The Jordan Times

AMMAN — The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) on Monday received 100 electric vehicles to cut down on emissions and operating costs.

Amman Mayor Yousef Shawarbeh said Alkan International, affiliated with Renault Jordan supplied GAM with the vehicles, which will be added to the municipality's fleet of 2,000 vehicles, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Husam Alnejdawi, GAM’s fleet manager, told The Jordan Times on Tuesday that the electric vehicles can be driven up to 300 kilometres on one charge in ideal conditions.

The vehicles were distributed among 22 areas in Amman where GAM operates, and take five to seven hours to fully charge normally. However, there are also 10 fast chargers that came with the vehicles, which can reduce charging time to two hours and 40 minutes, according to Alnejdawi.

The manager said that the 100 conventional vehicles the new cars will replace are very old and costly to operate, so they will be destroyed and sold as scrap metal.

During the ceremony to deliver the electric vehicles, Shawarbeh said that the project will help control spending in regards to fuel and maintenance, and will also help achieve GAM's strategic goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions to mitigate climate change.
