The Jordan Times

AMMAN — Jordan on Friday voted in favour of five UN General Assembly draft resolutions on Palestine and a sixth on the Syrian Golan Heights.

The draft resolutions, related to the Palestinian issue, include one over Jerusalem, the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People and the settlement of the Palestinian issue through peaceful means, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The drafts on Palestine also included one on the General Assembly Department of Public Information’s special information programme on the question of Palestine, and another on the Palestinians’ rights division at the General Assembly.

The draft resolution on Jerusalem was approved by a vote of 148 in favour, 11 against and 14 abstentions.

In the resolution, the General Assembly renewed its affirmation that any actions taken by Israel, the occupying power, to impose its laws, authority and administration on Jerusalem are illegal and, consequently, null, void and lack any legitimacy.

The assembly called on Israel to immediately halt all such illegal and unilateral procedures.

The draft on the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, which commended the committee’s role in realising peace and addressing the Palestinian issue and called on continued support from governments to the committee’s mandate of protecting the rights of Palestinians, received 100 votes in favour and 12 against, while 62 states abstained.

The settlement of the Palestinian issue through peaceful means draft resolution was approved by 156 votes and rejected by eight states, while 12 abstained from voting.

Another resolution, which affirms the importance of the special information programme on the question of Palestine and calls for continuing its mandate, was approved by a vote of 152 in favour, eight against and 14 abstentions.

The fifth draft on the Palestinians’ rights division at the General Assembly, which urges continued support for the department, received 96 votes in favour and 13 against, while 64 states abstained from voting on the resolution.

As for the draft resolution on the Syrian Golan Heights, it received 99 votes in favour and 10 against, with the abstention of 66 states.

The assembly announced in the draft that Israel has failed, so far, to consent to the UN Security Council Resolution 497 issued in 1981, in which the international body demanded that Israel rescind its decision to annex the Syrian territory.

The assembly also said that the Israeli decision issued on December 14, 1981, to impose its laws, authority and administration on the occupied Golan Heights is null and void and lacks legitimacy.
