‘Proud of our identity’ - Editorial ,The Jordan Times

In his address to the country on the occasion of the 70th Independence Day, His Majesty King Abdullah said Jordan is a country with a message of “freedom, peace, harmony and development, relying on our principles and proud of our identity and achievements”.

Equal citizens, equal citizenship rights, is a cardinal principle of the Kingdom, one on the basis of which stability, security and progress depend.

“There is no difference between Jordanians, except by what they do for their country,” said the King, and this is what makes Jordan strong, stable and resilient.

The statement sends a clear message to the people of the country that they are all equal before the law, but also that they have the obligation to abide by the rules and serve the country to the best of their ability, for only hard work and giving, sharing rights and duties makes a nation strong and a country progress.

“This nation was built on unity and a unifying national identity that embraces all those, who, with dignity and pride in being Jordanian, believe in this country, cherish and defend it,” said the Monarch, adding: “With the principles it embodies, our country stands strong, proud and dignified. Resilient, it moves forward despite difficult times, while other nations have fallen apart.”

Jordanians undoubtedly know this. They know that, as the King said, “Jordan’s solid national unity, social coherence and peaceful nature give it strength.”

Seeing the fires raging all around, Jordanians certainly realise that social cohesion, belonging and giving make their country stand strong in the face of adversity.

At the same time, “with its unifying identity”, Jordan “welcomes and supports its Arab brethren. Despite its size and meagre resources, it stands out in the world as a bright example of compassion, generosity and a nation that aids those in need”.

After all, “welcome to Jordan” is on the lips of every Jordanian who encounters a foreigner; it made this people’s hospitality legendary, something Jordanians are very proud of.

Founded on justice, equality, citizenship and the rule of law, the country follows the Hashemites’ vision and call for  “unity, freedom and pluralism” and advocates religious harmony.

For,  “the Arabs were Arabs before they were Muslims and Christians”, said the King.

Judging from the jubilation Jordanians expressed on May 25 — before and after that date, as well — and the huge number of young and old, men and women, Ammanites and people from governorates who took to the streets to celebrate the August occasion, seeing the pride they take in their King and flag, one knows that they have a unity of purpose, that there is solid national unity and that Jordan will remain the safe haven it is today.
