AMMAN — A total of 1,346 abandoned vehicles have been removed from the capital’s streets since the start of the year, according to a municipal official, who said on Monday that more will be removed to improve the aesthetics of Amman.

The majority of the abandoned cars were removed from streets near industrial areas, where car shops are concentrated, said Yousef Dalabih, head of the construction monitoring department at the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) .

The municipality began removing abandoned cars in 2011 due to their excessive number. The municipality turned the initiative into an ongoing campaign to rid the streets of the capital of visual and environmental pollution by towing away all cars left on the sides of the streets to a guarded location east of Amman.

Since the launch of the campaign, the municipality has towed over 8,500 cars, according to the GAM.

The initiative started with the aim of improving the appearance and cleanliness of the capital, and also because some of the abandoned vehicles were being used for negative practices, such as drug use, according to the GAM.

“We appreciate the cooperation of people and owners of abandoned vehicles in reporting about cars left for too long on the side of streets, and also owners of wrecked cars who are responding to our campaign,” Dalabih noted.

The municipality called on the public to report abandoned cars left in their areas of residence, noting that they can contact any of the municipality’s departments across the capital.
