'Art Jameel' Releases First Guide for Children on Coronavirus in Arabic

Asharq Al-Awsat

As part of an initiative aimed at raising children's awareness on coronavirus, Art Jameel, an independent organization that supports arts, education and heritage in the Middle East and beyond, released on Thursday "Corona Virus: A curious guide for courageous kids."

The publication is the first bilingual (Arabic/English) free guide on the health crisis for children. It is produced in collaboration with the science association Pleiadi and the network of Italian Children's Museums to encourage responsibility, curiosity, creativity and positivity in the younger generations, in light of the current challenges faced with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new book is a unique health guide written by scientists, illustrated by artists and designed by museum educators to provide children and young readers relatable and clearly communicated facts about the virus. It also enables parents, guardians and teachers to communicate calmly and better understand the measures taken to fight the virus, as well as to recognize the importance of unity and cooperation among the community members during the current crisis.

The project was first launched by Italian science association Pleiadi and then endorsed and promoted by the Network of Museums for Italian Children. The guide is currently being translated into 30 languages and distributed to 50 countries.

Lucio Biondaro, project director at Pleiadi in Verona, Italy, stated that the free guide aims to deliver scientific information to the biggest number of readers across the world.

"We want to teach all the children that we must be united, globally, to fight this virus," he said.

"I believe that nothing like this project has been done before, and we wish the book every success across the Arab region," he added.

For her part, Antonia Carver, executive director at Art Jameel, said: "Now is a time for solidarity and collaboration across the creative world to face this virus. We are so thankful for our colleagues at Pleiadi to have been able to cooperate to produce this Arabic/English version of Corona Virus: A curious guide for courageous kids. Now our aim is to get the word out, far and wide, and let children have access to the guide across the Arab world and beyond. As the booklet itself says, 'curiosity will conquer fear'."

The digital version of the guide is available in both Arabic and English on the websites of "Art Jameel" and the "Jameel Arts Center".
