House speaker calls on world parliaments to reject plans to move embassies to Jerusalem

The Jordan Times

AMMAN — President of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (APU) and Lower House Speaker Atef Tarawneh called on global parliaments to exert pressure on their governments to reject any instructions or intentions to transfer their embassies to Jerusalem.

Tarawneh made his remarks during an address at the 141st International Parliamentary Union Assembly, held in Belgrade, Serbia, the Jordan News Agency, Petra reported.

Tarawneh urged the world’s parliaments to side with justice and Palestine’s rightful inhabitants and to pressure the Israeli occupation, through their governments, to halt its “brutal tyranny and practices in Palestine”.

During the meeting, which sought to enhance the implementation of international law and regional cooperation, Tarawneh said that bolstering international security and peace, achieving the goals of international law and supporting its values are objectives that “today face obstacles placed by countries, organisations and entities that choose to resort to power, money and terror”.

Tarawneh said that UN institutions cannot implement their decisions or enforce their authority in countries that do not abide by international legislation, with Israel as the prime example.

He added that Israel’s continued violations are supported by a “clear bias” from the US administration.

Tarawneh pointed out that discussing parliamentary contributions to the implementation of international law and regional cooperation is a “difficult task, one that is hopeless when the world turns a blind eye to Israel’s outrageous acts”.

He shed light on Jordan’s peace treaty with Israel, noting that it is “threatened” by the breach of its clauses, especially in regards to Jerusalem.

Tarawneh underlined Jordan’s commitment to international law and to hosting millions of refugees and cooperating with other countries on counterterrorism, under His Majesty King Abdullah’s directives.

He reiterated the importance of a two-state solution in resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Tarawneh also pointed to the challenge posed by interference in Arab affairs from regional and international powers “that see the region as a battlefield for power”.
