The Jordan Times

AMMAN — Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Saturday received his Polish counterpart Jacek Czaputowicz over means of furthering bilateral cooperation and regional developments.

On the sidelines of the meeting, the two ministers signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) exempting Jordanian and Polish holders of diplomatic passports from entry visas to either country, a Foreign Ministry statement said.

The two ministers agreed to form a joint taskforce to determine steps to be taken by the two countries to enhance economic, trade, tourism, investment and cultural exchange.

In a joint press conference following the talks, Safadi shed light on the progress of bilateral cooperation in the field of tourism, pointing out that the Kingdom has received around 17,000 Polish tourists since the beginning of the year, compared with a total of 7,000 during the entirety of 2018, according to the statement.

With regards to Czaputowicz’s visit, Safadi said: “It has given us the chance to look into the practical steps that can be taken to enhance bilateral cooperation. We discussed ways of furthering economic, trade and investment relations and agreed that a joint taskforce from both ministries will in the next few days look into the steps that must be taken to activate economic cooperation on the levels of trade exchange and investment.”

For his part, Czaputowicz said that his country sees potential in providing technical assistance to Jordan, in addition to the transfer of technology expertise in the fields of energy and transport, the production of agricultural machinery, medical equipment, research and cultural exchange.

Safadi said that the Palestinian cause was at the forefront of their discussion on regional developments, expressing appreciation for Poland’s support of a two-state solution that guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, to guarantee its people’s rights and ensure lasting and encompassing peace.

He pointed out the Kingdom’s concerns over the deteriorating conditions in Palestine and stressed the need for united efforts to find “real grounds” for a resolution, in accordance with the two-state solution.

The minister also warned of any efforts that seek to tamper with Jerusalem’s status quo, reiterating Jordan’s position that sovereignty over the city is Palestinian and the custodianship over its Islamic and Christian holy sites is Hashemite, the statement said.

Talks also tackled the Syrian crisis and potential political resolutions to the conflict, as well as the issue of refugees, with Safadi expressing gratitude to Poland for its support to Jordan’s efforts in meeting the needs of Syrian refugees.

Also on Saturday, Safadi met with Susanna Terstal, EU special representative for the Middle East peace process, during which the foreign minister stressed the importance of the European role in international efforts to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

In their discussion of the Palestinian cause, Safadi reiterated the necessity of boosting international efforts to find a solution that complies with international legitimacy and international law, stressing the threat posed by the continued deterioration of conditions in Palestine on regional and global security.

The minister expressed appreciation for the support of the EU and its member states to the UNRWA, which has contributed to narrowing the agency’s budget deficit last year and continues to support it through financial difficulties this year as well.

Safadi and Trestal affirmed the continuation of coordination and cooperation between the Kingdom and the EU to find political prospects for ending the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Trestal said she valued the strategic partnership between Jordan and the EU and the Kingdom’s efforts to achieve regional peace and security.
