AMMAN — Prime Minister Jafar Hassan on Monday chaired the first meeting of a national committee overseeing preparations for Jordan’s 2030 commemoration of the second millennium of the Baptism of Jesus Christ.

 

The committee brings together government officials, religious and community leaders and representatives of relevant institutions to oversee preparations for the landmark religious and historical occasion, according to a Prime Ministry statement.

 

The committee will develop policies and guidelines, coordinate international outreach and national procedures, and plan events to mark the anniversary.

 

Hassan stressed the need to begin preparations immediately in line with the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah and in support of an initiative proposed by the Council of Church Leaders in Jordan.

 

He called for a comprehensive plan and clear timetable, saying the commemoration reflects Jordan’s historical and religious standing and its role as a global destination for Christian pilgrimage.

 

The prime minister also highlighted the occasion’s significance in promoting Jordan’s message of coexistence, respect for others, peace, love and human fraternity.

 

Hassan said that the government would mobilise all available resources to support preparations, describing the anniversary as an opportunity to strengthen Jordan’s position as a destination for religious heritage and Christian pilgrimage.

 

During the meeting, participants reviewed plans by the Foundation for the Development of Lands Adjacent to the Baptism Site for several projects, including an integrated village for Christian pilgrims and visitors, a museum dedicated to the Baptism of Jesus Christ, a green corridor and infrastructure upgrades at the site.

 

The meeting also called for the formation of specialised subcommittees to oversee implementation and ensure the objectives of the preparations are met, with the support of experts and specialists.

 

The national committee is chaired by the prime minister and includes the ministers of government communication, interior, digital economy and entrepreneurship, and tourism and antiquities.
