Safadi urges international action to stop Israeli escalation at OIC meeting

The Jordan Times

AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi has called on the international community to act “decisively” to stop the ongoing Israeli war of aggression against Gaza and escalating tensions in the occupied West Bank.

Speaking at the annual coordination meeting of the foreign ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Safadi warned that Israeli violations pose a serious threat to regional and international peace and security, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

Safadi reiterated the Kingdom’s commitment to safeguarding Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, emphasising the centrality of the Hashemite Custodianship under the Kingdom's leadership.

He described the protection of Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif and the preservation of Jerusalem’s Arab-Islamic-Christian identity as a top national priority.

The minister also underscored the role of the Jerusalem Awqaf Department and Al Aqsa Mosque Affairs, under Jordan’s Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, as the “sole legal authority overseeing Al Aqsa Mosque,” affirming Jordan’s continued efforts to confront and document Israeli violations and update OIC member states accordingly.

Safadi called for unified action by OIC countries to defend Jerusalem’s sanctities, stressing that protecting the city’s holy sites is a collective responsibility.

On the sidelines of the OIC meeting, Safadi held a series of bilateral talks with regional and international counterparts.

In a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the two sides discussed the need for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza, the implementation of a prisoner exchange deal, and unimpeded humanitarian access to the besieged Strip. They also addressed the broader regional implications of Israeli actions in the West Bank.

Safadi also met with Dominican Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez, where the two signed an agreement exempting holders of diplomatic and official passports from visa requirements.

In separate meetings with Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos and Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, Safadi discussed ways to bolster bilateral cooperation and deepen collaboration within the Jordan-EU partnership framework. The three ministers also held a trilateral meeting under the Trilateral Cooperation Mechanism, pledging to expand cooperation across multiple sectors in accordance with the directives of their respective leaders.

During discussions with European Commissioner for Equality and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib, Safadi stressed the importance of enhancing Jordan-EU strategic ties and reiterated the urgency of ending the aggression in Gaza and ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid.

In a separate meeting with UN Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher, Safadi explored avenues for strengthening Jordan-UN cooperation in humanitarian response efforts. Both officials affirmed their shared commitment to boosting aid delivery and alleviating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The meetings came as part of Jordan’s continued diplomatic efforts to mobilize international support for ending the conflict and advancing stability in the region.
