AMMAN — Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) Mayor Yousef Shawarbeh on Wednesday briefed a high-level Syrian delegation on Amman’s experience in local governance and “advanced” municipal services.

 

During a meeting with the governors of Damascus and Rural Damascus, as well as their accompanying technical delegation, Shawarbeh stressed GAM’s readiness to share its expertise and capabilities with its Syrian counterparts in areas such as e-governance, urban planning, investment, and waste management and treatment, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

 

“Cities today face a multitude of exceptional challenges, which require joint efforts to rebuild and advance urban systems,” he said, highlighting GAM’s “rich” experience in developing its operational framework and boosting international partnerships.

 

Shawarbeh attributed this progress to Royal directives, which were translated into a strategic plan for 2022–2026 aligned with national strategies and supportive of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and global competitiveness indicators.

 

For his part, Damascus Governor Maher Idlibi expressed hope that the meeting would mark the beginning of a renewed path of cooperation and integration between the two capitals, and harnesses each city’s resources, expertise, and experiences in service of citizens aspiring to safe, modern, green, and regionally engaged urban environments.

 

Idlibi called for expanding partnerships between Amman and Damascus in fields such as smart transportation, municipal digital transformation, modern urban planning, public spaces and parks, and solid waste management.

 

The two-day visit by the Syrian delegation comes as part of ongoing efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation and exchange expertise, particularly in urban planning, sustainability, digital services, and infrastructure.
