AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi on Thursday received Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs, and Development Cooperation Maxim Prévot, who arrived in the Kingdom following a visit to Lebanon.

The two ministers held talks emphasising their shared commitment to strengthening the historic friendship between Jordan and Belgium and discussed coordinated efforts to end the dangerous escalation in the region, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

Safadi and Prévot condemned the Israeli attacks on Lebanon, which have caused numerous civilian casualties, and affirmed their full solidarity with the Lebanese people.

They stressed support for Lebanon’s sovereignty, security, and the protection of its citizens, calling for an immediate ceasefire, full adherence to the November 27, 2024, ceasefire agreement, and implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

They also highlighted the need for the Lebanese government to assert control over its territory, activate state institutions, and ensure that weapons remain under state authority.

Safadi underscored the urgent need for international action to stop Israeli aggression against Lebanon, describing the attacks as a blatant violation of international law and a serious escalation threatening regional stability and security.

The ministers also highlighted the importance of mobilising international efforts to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to Lebanon to support over one million displaced citizens.

They welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached between the United States and Iran, with Safadi emphasising that negotiations must lead to a comprehensive and lasting calm based on respect for international law, state sovereignty, addressing decades-long sources of tension, and enhancing regional stability.

The discussion also covered developments in the occupied Palestinian territories. Safadi stressed the importance of stabilising Gaza and removing obstacles to the delivery of humanitarian aid.

He also called for an end to Israeli measures that drive escalation, undermine the two-state solution, and threaten efforts toward a just and comprehensive peace, particularly settlement expansion, land annexation, violations of religious freedoms, and breaches of the legal and historical status of Jerusalem’s Islamic and Christian holy sites.

Safadi also commended Belgium’s support for the Palestinian people’s right to an independent state based on the two-state solution and for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

Both ministers reiterated the strength of Jordan-Belgium relations and their commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation across trade, investment, defence, and other sectors, in line with Jordan’s strategic partnership with the EU.

They agreed to continue enhancing bilateral cooperation, coordinate on issues of mutual interest, and closely follow developments across the region.
