AMMAN — Jordan was re-elected on Friday to the Executive Board of UNESCO for the 2025–2029 term, marking the Kingdom’s third consecutive term and highlighting its influential role in international cultural, educational, and scientific cooperation, following elections held on the sidelines of the organisation’s 43rd General Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
On Friday, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Fouad Majali said that Jordan’s re-election to UNESCO for a third consecutive term, since 2017, reflects the international recognition of the Kingdom’s constructive role within the organisation and its commitment to strengthening international cooperation in humanitarian, scientific, and cultural fields.
Majali noted that Jordan will continue working with member states to promote quality education, safeguard cultural heritage, empower youth and women, and leverage science for sustainable development.
He highlighted that Jordan’s membership in UNESCO serves as an effective platform to uphold its longstanding position in defending Islamic and Christian holy sites in occupied Jerusalem, in line with the historic Hashemite custodianship, and to preserve the city’s human and spiritual heritage while resisting attempts to erase its identity or alter its historic and legal character.
Majali also thanked the member states that voted for Jordan, stressing that the decision reflects the international community’s trust in and respect for Jordan’s moderate policies and diplomacy, which are built on openness, cooperation, and partnerships with the United Nations and its affiliated agencies.
