AMMAN — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was “closely” following up on the situation of Jordanian nationals who were aboard the Global Freedom Flotilla intercepted by Israeli authorities.
Ministry spokesperson Fuad Majali said the chargé d’Affaires at the Jordanian Embassy in Tel Aviv visited the detained Jordanians at the facility where Israeli authorities are holding flotilla passengers.
He confirmed that all Jordanian citizens are in good health.
Majali added that the envoy also checked on nationals from Kuwait and Mauritania, following official requests from the two governments.
Those individuals were also reported to be in good condition, he said.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the rights and wellbeing of Jordanian citizens, saying that the embassy in Tel Aviv and the ministry’s operations and consular affairs are working to ensure their swift and safe return.
Majali stressed that Jordan holds Israel fully responsible for the safety of Jordanian citizens, urging Israeli authorities to respect their legal rights and facilitate their prompt repatriation.
The flotilla said Friday the Israeli navy had intercepted 42 vessels this week while officials said more than 400 activists were detained, according to AFP.
The Global Sumud Flotilla of around 45 vessels began its voyage last month, with politicians and activists including Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg heading to Gaza, where the United Nations says famine has set in.
