AMMAN — The leaders of the Southern European Union countries and Jordan, meeting in Slovenia on Monday, commended the Kingdom’s pivotal role as a regional hub for humanitarian assistance and reconstruction efforts in Gaza, following the ceasefire agreement signed at the Sharm El Sheikh Peace Summit earlier this month.
In a joint communiqué issued after the MED9 Summit in Portorož, the participating countrie,France, Spain, Greece, Portugal, Italy, Slovenia, Malta, Cyprus and Croatia, hailed Jordan as a “credible and trusted partner” in advancing peace, stability and security in the Middle East and the Mediterranean.
The statement voiced deep concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and called for the sustained and unrestricted delivery of relief supplies.
It recognised Jordan’s strategic role in facilitating land, air, and sea corridors for aid deliveries and its efforts to coordinate international reconstruction initiatives.
The Med-9 leaders also praised US President Donald Trump’s initiative to end the two-year war in Gaza and prevent the displacement of its population, welcoming the outcomes of the Sharm El Sheikh Peace Summit and urging all parties to fully implement the truce and avoid actions that could jeopardise it.
The declaration reaffirmed the importance of Palestinian participation in the administration of Gaza, supported the Arab League’s Cairo initiative to establish a Palestinian administrative committee, and called for European Union involvement in the proposed Peace Council.
The communiqué also highlighted Jordan’s long-standing support for UNRWA and the Kingdom’s role in hosting large numbers of refugees, calling for greater international support to ease the economic and social burdens shouldered by the country.
Political analysts said the MED9 declaration underscores Jordan’s growing diplomatic weight and the credibility of its balanced foreign policy under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah.
Abdel Hakim Qarallah, a political analyst, said the statement reaffirms Jordan’s position as a “trusted and credible partner” in promoting peace and stability in the region, particularly amid the ongoing Israeli escalation in Gaza and the West Bank.
“This declaration highlights Jordan’s consistent diplomatic principles and its active engagement with Arab and Islamic causes, foremost the Palestinian issue,” he said. “It echoes His Majesty’s vision that no peace or stability in the region is possible without an independent, viable Palestinian state on the 1967 borders.”
Qaralleh added that the focus on sustaining humanitarian aid to Gaza reflects Jordan’s humanitarian diplomacy and its role as a model of moderation and peace-building in the region.
Military strategist Nidal Abu Zeid said the MED9 statement demonstrates Europe’s confidence in Jordan’s regional influence and its capacity to act as a stabilising force amid shifting geopolitical currents.
“The significance of this declaration stems from the diverse composition of the MED9 group, a coalition of Mediterranean states with different political orientations and geostrategic interests,” he said. “When such a bloc collectively endorses Jordan’s approach, it reflects broad trust across Europe in the Kingdom’s diplomacy and its ability to achieve balance in a turbulent region.”
Abu Zeid noted that Jordan’s unified and moderate diplomacy, it’s hosting of NATO’s regional training centre; and its coordination with both Arab and European partners reinforce its strategic importance. “This statement validates Jordan’s consistent pursuit of stability, humanitarian access and international legitimacy,” he said.
