AMMAN — Jordan has continued to play a leading role in providing humanitarian assistance to the Gaza Strip since the outbreak of the war on October 7, 2023, maintaining a steady flow of medical and relief support despite ongoing challenges on the ground.
The Kingdom’s efforts have included the establishment of field hospitals, delivery of aid by land and air, and the implementation of medical initiatives aimed at supporting civilians in the besieged enclave.
As part of the Jordan Medical Corridor initiative, authorities have also been evacuating child patients from Gaza for treatment in Jordan. On April 27, 2026, the 26th group of evacuees arrived, comprising 81 children and 108 accompanying family members, according to a statement to The Jordan Times.
Since March 4, 2025, a total of 2,422 individuals have been evacuated for treatment in Jordan and abroad, including 716 patients and 1,706 family companions.
Officials say Jordan is seeking to increase the number of evacuated patients and accelerate the process, though efforts are constrained by logistical and technical challenges facing the World Health Organisation, as well as restrictions imposed by Israel.
The initiative was announced by His Majesty King Abdullah during a meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House on February 11, 2025. It aims to evacuate 2,000 children from Gaza in stages, along with accompanying family members.
Evacuated patients receive treatment in both public and private hospitals across Jordan. Authorities describe the country as a regional leader in healthcare, noting that patients return to Gaza after completing treatment to allow others to benefit from the program.
The Jordan Medical Corridor is part of a broader humanitarian strategy that includes land and air aid corridors, field hospitals, and specialised programmes such as the Restoring Hope Initiative, which provides prosthetics for amputees.
“Jordan continues its humanitarian efforts to support the people of Gaza,” the statement said, highlighting the Kingdom’s ongoing commitment to providing life-saving assistance.
Jordan runs two military field hospitals in Gaza, one in the Strip's north and was established in 2009 following the war in 2008, and the second is in Khan Younis in the south, which was established in November 2023 at the peak of the Israeli war of aggression on the coastal enclave that erupted on October 7, 2023.
Besides the field hospitals in Gaza, the JAF established the Jordanian field hospital in Nablus in late November 2023.
According to figures by JAF on April 6, the Jordanian Field Hospital South Gaza has treated 19,618 patients and performed 365 major and minor surgeries since the start of its mission in mid-February, as part of efforts to alleviate suffering in the Gaza Strip and provide emergency and ongoing medical care.
Speaking to Al Mamlaka TV on October 7, 2023, Brig. Gen. Ahmad Subihat, commander of Field Medicine at the Royal Medical Services, said that five Jordanian field hospitals currently operating in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, providing a wide range of medical specialities.
Subihat said that the Khan Yunis field hospital is staffed by around 130 medical personnel.
He added that Royal directives were issued to establish a second hospital in Khan Yunis immediately following the outbreak of the war, alongside Jordanian field hospitals in Gaza's Tal Al Hawa, Nablus, Jenin and Ramallah.
“Since the start of the war in Gaza, Jordanian field hospitals in Gaza and the West Bank have treated 704,429 patients, performed 26,925 surgical operations, and managed 62,474 war-related injuries. The Jordanian initiative has also fitted 637 prosthetic limbs for the injured,” Subihat said.
