Jordanian field hospital in southern Gaza performs complex surgeries

The Jordan Times

AMMAN — Medical teams at the Jordanian Field Hospital in Southern Gaza on Saturday performed a complex surgery on a 22-year-old patient suffering from chest and abdominal injuries that caused severe bleeding, the Jordan Armed Forces – Arab Army (JAF) reported.

The hospital commander said the operation was conducted by a specialised medical team, including anaesthesiologists and operating room technicians.

The hospital’s director noted that many cases treated are critical and complex, requiring surgical interventions such as maxillofacial procedures, orthopaedic surgeries, vascular and chest operations, as well as shrapnel removal and fracture fixation. He emphasised that these efforts reflect the advanced medical services the hospital provides to residents of Gaza.

A general surgery specialist said that the patient arrived at the emergency department with severe bleeding, low blood pressure, and breathing difficulties due to shrapnel injuries. A chest tube was inserted, and the patient was rushed into surgery, which revealed multiple perforations in the diaphragm, spleen, stomach, and intestines.

The medical team repaired the diaphragm and stomach, removed the spleen, resected damaged sections of the intestines, and performed a side-opening procedure due to the severity of the injuries. The patient was then admitted to intensive care for monitoring and further treatment.

Also on Friday, the hospital medical teams saved the life of an 11-year-old Palestinian boy who suffered a life-threatening neck injury.

The hospital commander said that the boy sustained a penetrating wound to the neck that severely damaged his trachea and larynx, leaving him unable to breathe, adding that a specialised surgical team, supported by anesthesiology and operating room technicians, performed a complex emergency procedure that restored the boy’s vital airway functions.

A pediatric surgeon at the hospital said the child arrived at the emergency room with a deep neck wound and dangerously low blood oxygen levels due to the tracheal injury. He was immediately transferred to the operating room, where surgeons removed shrapnel and reconstructed the trachea, larynx, and lower pharynx, preserving both swallowing and breathing functions, the statement said.

The boy was then admitted to the intensive care unit for close monitoring. Medical staff confirmed that he is now in stable condition and has since returned to normal life.

Since July 20, the Jordanian Field Hospital in Southern Gaza has treated 45,431 patients, performed 2,940 major and minor surgeries, and fitted 93 prosthetic limbs, bringing the total to 625 under the ‘Restoring Hope’ initiative.

Jordan operates two military field hospitals in Gaza: one in the north, established in 2009 following the 2008 war, and the second in Khan Younis in the south, launched in November 2023 during the Israeli aggression on the enclave that erupted on October 7, 2023.

In addition, the JAF established the Jordanian Field Hospital in Nablus in late November 2023, which has conducted over 900 surgeries and treated more than 83,000 patients since its opening.
