Foreign Ministry says probe launched into shooting incident near King Hussein Bridge

AMMAN — Authorities have opened an official investigation into a shooting incident that took place Tursday afternoon on the other side of the King Hussein Bridge (Al Karameh Crossing), Foreign Ministry said.

In a statement on Thursday, the ministry strongly condemned the shooting incident as a “serious violation of international law and a direct threat to the Kingdom’s humanitarian efforts in Gaza.”

It also reaffirmed Jordan’s “firm rejection of violent and unlawful acts” that jeopardise the Kingdom’s interests, particularly its key role in delivering aid to the besieged Gaza Strip.

The Israeli media reported on Thursday that two Israelis were killed and two others were critically wounded in a suspected shooting attack near the King Hussein (Allenby) Bridge border crossing between the occupied West Bank and Jordan.

The ministry added that it was closely following up on the condition of the Jordanian drivers who crossed into Gaza earlier in the day to ensure their safe and immediate return.

According to the statement, 22 Jordanian aid trucks successfully crossed the border on Thursday as part of the agreed upon procedures, which allowed the dispatch of 8,664 aid trucks in 201 convoys to the besieged Strip, establishing Jordan as a vital humanitarian lifeline for the war-torn territory.

The ministry underlined the urgent need for an immediate end to Israeli war of aggression against Gaza and called for a permanent ceasefire. It also urged the international community to launch an effective diplomatic initiative aimed at resolving the conflict based on a two-state solution, warning of the broader regional consequences of continued escalation.

The statement identified the individual allegedly involved in the shooting as Abdul-Muttalib Al Qaisi, a 56-year-old civilian who had been working as a humanitarian aid truck driver for the past three months.

The Public Security Directorate (PSD) announced on Thursday the suspension of passenger movement through the King Hussein Bridge until further notice, after authorities on the other side closed the crossing.

The PSD urged travellers to monitor official updates and media reports regarding the reopening of the crossing.

The Karameh border crossing was shut down by Israeli authorities in response to a security incident on the opposite side of the border.
