AMMAN — The Jordanian Field Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, said on Monday that it has treated around 696,000 patients since opening.
The hospital commander told Al Mamlaka TV that 5,935 patients were treated just last week. He added that the facility specialises in complex and major surgical procedures, including deformities, nerve-related injuries, skull fractures, and other serious cases.
The commander also noted that the hospital has treated more than one-third of Gaza’s population, a milestone made possible by the advanced medical expertise of its staff.
Also on Sunday, the medical teams performed a specialised surgical procedure on a 21-year-old patient suffering from an enlarged spleen caused by thalassaemia-related anaemia.
The hospital commander said medical and nursing staff conducted the operation with a high level of efficiency, as part of the hospital's ongoing efforts to provide advanced medical care to people in the Gaza Strip despite difficult conditions and operational challenges.
The procedure was carried out by a specialised surgical team, with the participation of anaesthesia and operating theatre staff, he added, Al Mamlaka TV reported.
A general surgery specialist said the patient's condition required urgent surgical intervention due to dependence on weekly blood transfusions, which had led to iron accumulation in the body and negative effects on the heart muscle. After completing all required medical procedures, the spleen was fully removed, and the operation was deemed successful.
Expressing their gratitude and appreciation, the patient's family commended the humanitarian and medical efforts of the Jordanian field hospital teams in helping to ease the suffering of people in Gaza.
Jordan runs two military field hospitals in Gaza, one in the Strip's north and was established in 2009 following the war in 2008, and the second is in Khan Younis in the south, which was established in November 2023 at the peak of the Israeli war of aggression on the coastal enclave that erupted on October 7, 2023.
Besides the field hospitals in Gaza, the JAF established the Jordanian field hospital in Nablus in late November 2023.
Other humanitarian programmes include the land bridge for aid delivery, the mobile bakery, the Restoring Hope Initiative, which provides prosthetics for amputees, and the evacuation of critical cases to Jordanian hospitals.
