Kite flying is a deeply rooted tradition for children in Gaza , serving as both a joyful escape from conflict and a powerful cultural symbol.

 

For decades children have used available scrap materials to build and fly kites above the Gaza Strip , transforming the sky into an outlet for creativity , mental relief and expression.

 

kites are commonly flown by children for recreation particularly in displacement campsas in the Gaza strip where they seek moments of relief amid the harsh conditions created by Israel’s genocide in the enclave.

 

The lightweight kites are controlled by strings from the ground and if a string breaks, however, wind currents can carry them beyond Gaza, where some residential areas lie only a few kilometers from Israeli communities across the boundary.

 

Kites flown by children in the Gaza Strip have recently triggered Israeli threats of assassinations and the evacuation of residential neighborhoods, despite the Israeli army acknowledging that kites recovered near Gaza carried no suspicious material and posed no danger.

 

“No suspicious findings were identified on the kites,” and “at no stage was there any danger to the public” , the military stressed.

 

The Israeli army said on August 22 that four kites had been found near the Nahal Oz community over roughly 24 hours -- one on August 21 and three the following morning.

 

After examining them, the army acknowledged that “no suspicious materials were found” and that they “posed no danger to the public.”

 

Despite no explosives being found on the recovered kites, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz threatened on August 23 to escalate assassinations in Gaza and evacuate Palestinians from residential areas if such launches continued.

 

In a joint statement following a security assessment attended by Israeli army chief Eyal Zamir and senior military officials, Netanyahu and Katz warned that the army would “increase assassination operations” against those it holds responsible.

 

They also threatened to evacuate residents from areas from which Israel says kites, balloons or drones are launched.

 

Earlier on the same day, Katz ordered the military to act “immediately and forcefully” against kites and balloons coming from Gaza.

 

“A balloon is like a kite, and a kite is like a drone, whether it carries explosives or not,” he said.

 

Netanyahu and Katz both said that they had instructed the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) to take significant action after the launching of kites from the Gaza Strip over the weekend.

 

While the joint statement cited “kites, drones, and balloons”, military inspections confirmed finding only 10 paper kites – all completely free of explosives and flown by children in displacement camps.

 

Four kites were found in Kibbutz Nahal Oz, which is about 800m from the Gaza border, on August 21 and August 22. The rest were found elsewhere in southern Israel.

 

Subsequent Israeli air attacks in central Gaza on August 23 has killed four Palestinians including a four-year-old child and several others were wounded.

 

Israeli drone attacks also targeted southern Khan Younis and a tent sheltering displaced people at the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir el-Balah, resulting in more casualties.

 

In a statement, Netanyahu said he directed the defense establishment and the IDF to do “everything” to confront what he called the “lethal” threat of drones to Israel.

 

“We have been working for several years on a solution to the drone threat. We are the most advanced in the world, but this is a global problem,” Netanyahu said in a video message.

 

“My directive to the defense establishment and the IDF is to do everything against this lethal weapon — to strike it, to strike those operating it, to strike the place from which it was launched, to do everything in order to protect our citizens in the Gaza border communities and everywhere else,” Netanyahu said.

 

The threats drew both ridicule and concern among Palestinians in Gaza, with some fearing that the ‘Children’s toys’ could be used to justify a broader Israeli military escalation.

 

Hamas said that Israeli threats over kites and balloons launched from the Gaza Strip were an attempt to fabricate pretexts for continued attacks and threaten Palestinian children.

 

Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem warned against Israeli claims concerning what he described as “children’s toys in displacement camps.”

 

“These threats, based on fabricated pretexts, are an attempt to justify the continuation of aggression and violations against our people, reaching the point of threatening children in the Gaza Strip,” Qassem said.

 

He urged the US administration, mediators, guarantor states and the Board of Peace to pressure Israel to halt attacks that he said were undermining the ceasefire, which the Palestinian side was fully observing.

 

Israel has continued to carry out targeted killings in the Strip and Palestinian residents of war – battered Gaza fled homes on August 24 as Israeli strikes and tank fire hit Bueij refugee camp in central Gaza were at least four people, including two children were killed .

 

An earlier Israeli strike on a tent in Deir al-Balah killed a man, according to Al-Aqsa Hospital.

 

Besides, a man was killed and five others were wounded in an Israeli strike in Khan Younis in southern Gaza, according to Nasser Hospital.

 

Besides , Israeli tank fire hit an area east of Khan Younis, killing a 10-year-old girl, according to the hospital, where her body was taken.

 

Political analysts said that the Israeli threats could serve both military and domestic political purposes.

 

They could signal an intention to resume broader airstrikes under what they described as flimsy pretexts while also serving domestic political objectives during Israel’s election period.

 

Israel was seeking to create a climate of escalation and divert domestic attention while avoiding its obligations under Gaza ceasefire arrangements.

 

Israeli forces have carried out daily violations of a ceasefire in place since Oct. 10, 2025 which have killed 1,288 people and wounded 4,290 , according to Palestine Health Ministry data.

 

Israel launched a war on Gaza in October 2023, killing more than 73,000 Palestinians, wounding over 174,000 and devastating about 90% of the enclave’s civilian infrastructure.

 

The displaced Palestinian children are flying these kites in camps surrounded by the invading Israeli forces who still control seventy percent of the Strip , so how can paper kites penetrate all this space and pose a security threat ?

 

It is unimaginable that a state claiming to be a great power possessing a nuclear arsenal considers a paper kite flown by a Palestinian child a security threat.
