Thailand pledges $50,000 to UNRWA for Gaza relief

The Jordan Times

AMMAN — Thai Ambassador to Jordan Supark Prongthura has announced Thailand’s pledge of $50,000 to UNRWA in response to the UN agency’s Flash Appeal 2025 in support of humanitarian assistance for Gaza.

This is in addition to the special contribution of $80,000 made in October 2023 and $50,000 made in July last year in response to UNRWA Gaza Flash Appeals, according to a Thai embassy statement.

“UNRWA has been a lifeline for Palestine refugees for over seven decades. With that in mind, Thailand has consistently made financial contributions to support the work of UNRWA since 1978,” said Prongthura.

The diplomat said that Thailand is committed to its multi-year pledge for a voluntary contribution to UNRWA in the total amount of $200,000, with payments to be made in five annual instalments of $40,000 in the period of 2022 -2026.

“Our special contribution today aims to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people who are in urgent need of food, water, energy, medical supplies, and shelter in Gaza,” he said.

“We hope that our contribution will help UNRWA to continue its works in accordance with its mandates for the benefits of Palestinians facing the current dire humanitarian situation,” the ambassador said.

Prongthura said that since the conflict in Gaza flared up on 7 October 2023, the continuity of the operation of UNRWA has been more important than ever.

He commended UNRWA for its dedicated efforts in spearheading the humanitarian cause in the Gaza Strip and beyond.

Thailand joins the Secretary General and other UN Member States in appealing to the international community and all stakeholders to resume funding and continue to actively support UNRWA, the ambassador said.

He added that such international support would ensure adequate and timely delivery of essential services to all Palestinians without interruption during these difficult times.

“We also reiterate our call for all parties to fully comply with their obligations under international law and the relevant UN Security Council’s resolutions,” the diplomat said.

Prongthura called for the immediate ceasefire, the release of all remaining hostages unhindered, and sustainable access and delivery of humanitarian assistance, the protection of civilians and civilian objects, and the protection of humanitarian and UN personnel and humanitarian facilities and assets, among others.

He added that this pledge is in line with the policy and position of the Jordanian government in calling for the international community to support UNRWA’s mission in providing humanitarian assistance to the affected Palestinian citizens, especially those in Gaza.
