Waqf Thareed serves 1,300 meals daily during Ramadan

AMMAN — Executive director of Waqf Thareed Yazan Qtaish said on Saturday that the endowment had distributed around 700,000 meals in downtown Amman over the past two years.

Speaking to Al Mamlaka TV, Qtaish said that during the holy month of Ramadan, the number of meals served each day was increased from 1,000 to 1,300 to ensure that all beneficiaries of the endowment are accommodated.

He noted that the waqf model relies on investing its principal and using the returns in line with the Islamic principle of “withholding the asset and dedicating its benefit”, adding that its capital is managed through Sharia-compliant mechanisms overseen by several boards and committees.

Qtaish also affirmed that investment returns are used to fund the meals and urged people to contribute to the waqf’s capital, describing it as a form of ongoing charity that sustains the endowment, noting that the social sector currently struggles to maintain sustainable operations and services.

He stressed that, under Sharia, the waqf is not allowed to receive zakat funds, explaining that “Click Waqf” is dedicated to the waqf’s capital, while “Click Thareed” is used for meals and direct food support.

Qtaish added that the waqf intends to cover all governorates across the kingdom, with a new centre set to open in Abu Ubaida, Al-Balqa, before the end of the year.
