AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah’s address before the European Parliament on Tuesday drew “wide” praise for its clear and principled focus on the Palestinian cause and Jerusalem, as well as its call for international action to end the Israeli aggression and restore peace to the region.
Secretary-General of the Royal Committee for Jerusalem Affairs Abdullah Kanaan said that King Abdullah’s address before the European Parliament for the sixth time came at a “critical” moment when global crises and conflicts are escalating, and human suffering in Palestine, especially in Gaza, is deepening.
Kanaan noted that His Majesty’s call to Europe stressed the need to stop Israeli violations against Palestinians, protect Islamic and Christian holy sites, and revive efforts towards a just and lasting peace, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
He referred to the importance of recent announcements by European countries, including France, Britain, Spain, and Ireland, expressing their intention to recognise the State of Palestine, a step that boosts diplomatic support for Palestinian rights.
Kanaan stressed that Jordan, under the Hashemite Custodianship of Jerusalem’s holy sites, remains committed to peace and coexistence and stands as a reliable partner for Europe in countering extremism and advancing stability in the region.
Palestinian Ambassador to Jordan Atallah Khairi commended the King’s address as a “powerful” affirmation of Jordan’s steadfast positions in support of the Palestinians.
The diplomat said that His Majesty’s speech placed the Palestinian cause at the forefront of international attention and urged European nations, with their significant influence, to shoulder their moral responsibilities towards ending the occupation and securing Palestinian rights.
Khairi highlighted the King’s consistent prioritisation of the Palestinian cause on the world stage, noting that His Majesty seizes every opportunity to call for an end to the occupation and to demand full political and human rights for Palestinians.
The diplomat warned of Israeli measures aimed at preventing the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, including settlement expansion, land confiscation, and settler activity in the West Bank.
Khairi also praised the King’s call for peace, describing it as “courageous and essential at this dangerous juncture for the region.”
The ambassador also highlighted the importance of the Hashemite Custodianship of Jerusalem’s Islamic and Christian sites, which ensures the preservation of their historic and religious identity, stressing the “deep” appreciation of the Palestinian people and leadership for Jordan’s support in their struggle.
