AMMAN — Lower House Speaker Ahmad Safadi on Wednesday held separate meetings in London with Speaker of the UK House of Commons Sir Lindsay Hoyle and Speaker of the House of Lords Lord John McFall to discuss bilateral relations and regional developments, particularly the situation in Gaza.
During the talks, both sides reaffirmed the strength of Jordanian-British ties and emphasised the urgent need to intensify efforts to end the war on Gaza and address the worsening humanitarian crisis, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
Safadi briefed UK officials on Jordan’s political, economic, and administrative modernisation efforts, led by His Majesty King Abdullah, aimed at expanding public participation and building program-based, party-led parliaments centred on youth and women.
He also reiterated Jordan’s firm position on the Palestinian cause and warned that actions by Israel’s far-right government threaten to destabilise the region.
Safadi also stressed Jordan’s continued commitment, under the Hashemite Custodianship, to protect Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem and preserve the city’s Arab and Islamic identity.
The Speaker also addressed Jordan’s role in hosting refugees and its efforts to secure its northern border against drug and arms smuggling, reiterating the Kingdom’s support for Syria’s unity and stability.
Speaker Hoyle commended Jordan’s role in promoting regional stability and expressed strong support for the two-state solution, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
He also highlighted the UK’s backing of Jordan’s political modernisation process and underscored the importance of continued dialogue between parliaments.
Lord McFall echoed support for a political solution to the conflict, praising Jordan’s stabilising role and emphasising the need to create the conditions for lasting peace through the establishment of a Palestinian state.
