AMMAN — While voicing disappointment over Jordan's loss to Uruguay in Wednesday's game, tweeps expressed pride in the national team, which they said has given placed Jordan on football's global map.
They said the match with Uruguay, which is ranked 6th internationally, was a good experience for the team and provided an opportunity for its members to play against some of the world's best players.
The Jordanian team, also known as Nashama, lost 5-0 to two-time world champions Uruguay in the first leg of the intercontinental qualifiers play-off in Amman.
"Regardless of the outcome, nashama made history. We are proud of our national team and grateful for all their efforts," Samar Sukkar (@samarsan) tweeted Thursday.
"It was a great achievement for our team to reach this far. The game was difficult, but Jordan did not reach this level by chance. There is potential that needs to be tapped in the future," Sami (Sami_68) tweeted late Wednesday.
Tweeps said the national team should receive more support and encouragement in order to perform better in the future.
"It was great success reaching such a level," Tareq Hadid (@tareqhadid) tweeted.
Enas Al Dabbas (@EnasDabbas) said the team's overall performance "was good" in light of its limited resources.
Whether Jordan's team qualifies for the World Cup or not, it reached this advanced stage with almost "no capabilities" except the determination of its members, Marah (@marah_hyajina) tweeted.
Some tweeps posted jokes, criticising the performance of the goalkeeper, substitute Mohammad Shatnawi who filled in for the suspended Amer Shafie, while others blamed coach Hossam Hassan for the "weak" line-up.
Roufida Al Arara (@chemicalrfaf) tweeted: "In my opinion, the coach did not select the best formation for the match."
Jordan now needs a 6-0 win in the second leg of the match in Uruguay next week to get to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
On Facebook, users posted humorous comments, playing on the slogan of the public campaign to support than national team "Let's go to Brazil", with some changing it into "Let's go home" or "We're not going to Brazil any more, let's go to Aqaba".
On his official Facebook page, HRH Prince Ali, president of the Jordan Football Association, expressed pride in the Nashama despite the result.
"Hard Luck to our Nashama. I continue to be proud of them regardless of today's result and I will continue to support them," said a statement posted on his page.
"It is certainly an experience for our national team. Our football journey has been challenging, but worth every step, because regardless of today's result, Jordan still made football history," the prince added.
