AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah, in a meeting on Tuesday with United Nations Secretary General António Guterres, highlighted the important role of the UN and the international community in pushing forward the peace process between the Palestinians and the Israelis.
King Abdullah called for relaunching negotiations between the two sides, on the basis of the two-state solution, leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, according to a Royal Court statement.
His Majesty noted the importance of maintaining international support for UNRWA to enable it to continue to provide its vital services in education, healthcare and relief.
At the meeting, held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly and attended by HRH Crown Prince Hussein, the King commended the UN’s role in addressing international challenges and supporting peace and stability efforts regionally and internationally.
Discussions at the meeting also covered the implications of the crisis in Ukraine on the region and the world, as well as dealing with climate change, food security challenges, and developments in Iraq and Syria.
His Majesty stressed the need for the international community to shoulder its responsibilities towards Syrian refugees and their host countries, to ensure the sustainability of relief and humanitarian services provided to them.
