Amman -- His Majesty King Abdullah II on Sunday opened the permanent premises of the German-Jordanian University near Madaba south of Amman.

The government-run university offers applied curricula according to what is applied at German universities. Its establishment was a culmination of a debt-swap deal between the ministry of higher education and the German education and research ministry.

It started to offer education for Bacherlor's and Masters students in 2005 in a host of scientific and administrative specializations. Around 3,000 students are receiving education in the university. So far, the university has sent more than 1,500 students on monthly, one-semester, and annual scholarships.

The King, who was accompanied by Her Majesty Queen Rania Al-Abdullah, was briefed on programs, plans and ambitions the university is striving to achieve. He also toured a science lab, which provides scientific programs for students.

Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Wajih Owais, said during the opening ceremony, the university was founded to be consistent with its objectives and plans to develop higher education in Jordan, and achieve a quantum leap.

German Minister of Higher Education, Annette Schavan, said the opening of the university is a model of cooperation between the countries, adding that the university focuses on practical sides of the academia to develop the business environment.
