ICJ dismisses Sudan’s genocide case against UAE

Roya News

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Monday dismissed a case brought by Sudan accusing the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of aiding genocide during the ongoing war in Sudan.

The court ruled that it does not have the legal authority to hear the case, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.

Sudan had filed a formal complaint accusing the UAE of supporting the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which Khartoum claims is committing acts of genocide amid the country’s civil war. The UAE has vehemently denied these allegations.

In its ruling, the ICJ stated that it “manifestly lacked jurisdiction” over the matter, effectively bringing the case to an end at the preliminary stage.

The UAE praised the ICJ's, with the Deputy Assistant Minister for Political Affairs Reem Ketait describing the case as having no merit.

"This decision is a clear and decisive affirmation of the fact that this case was utterly baseless," she said in a statement provided to AFP.

Ketait added that the ruling underscored the inappropriateness of the legal action from the outset: “The court's finding that it is without jurisdiction confirms that this case should never have been brought.”
