Thailand contributes additional $50,000 in support of UNRWA

The Jordan Times

AMMAN — Given the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, the Government of Thailand has decided to provide a special contribution of $50,000 for the UNRWA Gaza Flash Appeal 2024 to provide life-saving support to Palestinian Refugees. This is in addition to the special contribution of $80,000 made in October last year in response to UNRWA 90 Days Gaza Flash Appeal, according to a statement for The Jordan Times.

UNRWA welcomes Supark Prongthura, Ambassador of Thailand to Jordan, and his delegation to the Office of UNRWA Affairs in Jordan. Their essential and timely funding contribution allows UNRWA to provide critical services in the months ahead for affected Palestinian refugees.

“We are grateful for Thailand’s contribution at this critical time, in response to the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.

It will allow us to purchase water, food and medical supplies urgently required by the population in the Gaza Strip.

The Government of Thailand has been a great humanitarian supporter of UNRWA and we are proud to be their partner in serving Palestine Refugees in this hour of need. Your contributions will directly save human lives,” said the director of UNRWA affairs in Jordan, Olaf Becker.

As a responsible member of the international community and in line with Thailand’s longstanding humanitarian tradition, this contribution goes beyond Thailand’s support to UNRWA since 1978 and recent multi-year voluntary contributions to UNRWA from 2022-2026 totalling $200,000, funding core UNRWA programmes, including education, healthcare, and social protection services.

“Since the conflict in Gaza began on 7 October 2023, the continuity of the operation of UNRWA has been more important than ever.

Thailand commends UNRWA for its dedicated efforts in spearheading the humanitarian cause in the Gaza Strip and beyond. Thailand joins the Secretary-General and other UN Member States in appealing to the international community and all stakeholders to resume funding and continue to support UNRWA actively. We also reiterate our call for all parties to fully comply with their obligations under international law and the relevant UN Security Council’s resolutions, particularly regarding the immediate ceasefire, the release of all remaining hostages, including 6 Thai nationals, the protection of civilians and civilian objects, and the protection of humanitarian and UN personnel and humanitarian facilities and assets,” said Prongthura, ambassador of Thailand to Jordan.

“We are gratefully proud of Thailand’s constant commitment as a donor to UNRWA, to supporting the Agency’s vital humanitarian work during ongoing hostilities in the Gaza Strip and beyond”, the statement said.
