Universities pledge new refugee scholarships at global forum

AMMAN — UNHCR Representative Maria Stavropoulou on Thursday stressed the importance of ensuring access to higher education for all, including refugees and the disadvantaged.

She noted that the education is a "key" pillar for building generations capable of bringing about change, and highlighted the 15/30 target, which seeks to raise the enrollment of refugee students in higher education to 15 per cent by 2030, according to UNHCR statement.

During the Global Refugee Forum, UNHCR's Education Officer Zeina Jadaan stressed that the most "prominent" commitment is the coordination between the Higher Education Alliance in Jordan and the international institutions to achieve this goal.

Building on this alliance, which was established last year, several Jordanian universities today announced new opportunities for refugees in higher education, in a step that promotes inclusiveness and expands access to education.

The forum concluded with commitments from a number of universities, including SOS Children's Villages, which will provide five scholarships in any university major in Jordan.

Amman Arab University will provide 15 scholarships within the same university, in addition to hosting a major conference that brings together representatives of the Jordanian private sector and the Association of Banks in Jordan, to highlight their role in supporting refugees' access to higher education

The Applied Science Private University will offer unifying university fees between Jordanian and Syrian students, and provide additional grants of 5 per cent for refugees.

Also, Princess Sumaya University for Technology will organise a student-led marathon, with proceeds allocated to the Refugee Student Support Fund.

Al Bayt University will organise a student bazaar reflecting the university's commitment to supporting education for refugees, according to UNHCR.
