Jordan welcomes US-Iran ceasefire agreement

The Jordan Times

AMMAN — Jordan on Wednesday welcomed a ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, as a "positive" step towards ending the dangerous escalation and tensions in the region.

The Foreign Ministry welcomed a statement the announcement by US President Donald Trump and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to pause hostilities, stressing the need for the ceasefire to lead to a comprehensive and sustainable de-escalation.

The ministry said that Jordan supports efforts led by Pakistan to reach a lasting agreement that addresses all issues that have destabilised security and stability in the region over past decades.

It also stressed the importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring freedom of international navigation in accordance with international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The ministry also stressed that the ceasefire would lead to ending violations and practices that undermine the sovereignty, security and stability of states, threaten the safety of their citizens, and enhance regional security and stability.

The United States and Iran have agreed to a two-week ceasefire, finalising the deal less than two hours before US President Donald Trump’s deadline for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face severe consequences.

Trump’s announcement late Tuesday marked a sharp shift from his earlier warning and followed mediation efforts led by Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
