Shawarbeh elected deputy mayor of Amman

AMMAN — Lawyer Yousef Shawarbeh on Wednesday became deputy mayor of the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) after receiving 24 votes during the second round of elections held for the post.

Omar Louzi got the other 16 votes during the election session presided by newly appointed Amman Mayor Aqel Biltaji, according to a GAM statement e-mailed to The Jordan Times.

The second round was held after Shawarbeh tied with Louzi in the first round while a third candidate received nine votes.

Born in 1968, Shawarbeh has a master’s degree in law. Previously, he was a member of the GAM council and head of the local committee of the capital’s Tareq neighbourhood.

During the GAM council’s first session that was held on Wednesday, Biltaji welcomed the new members and stressed the importance of continued cooperation and diligent efforts by both appointed and elected members to serve the city of Amman and its residents.

The mayor asserted that he will work in compliance with the law and in pursuance of related regulations to achieve developments that can positively reflect on the capital, at present and in the future.

Biltaji added that that he has presented a financial disclosure statement and it is available at the Ministry of Justice.

During the meeting, the council also named its various committees and their members.
