FAO supports Jordan’s regional food observatory

Jordan News

AMMAN — Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for the Near East and North Africa at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Abdul Hakim El-Waer has said that the Regional Observatory for Food Security, which was adopted by Jordan, “will be a good platform for exchanging solutions and scientific research among countries of the Middle East”, Al-Mamlaka TV reported on Sunday.

Waer said that “the observatory is working to provide the best results for the countries of Jordan, Syria, Iraq and Lebanon”, adding that “FAO is participating in the Arab four-way meeting by supporting Jordan’s initiative to establish an observatory for the Levant region, which will monitor everything related to food security variables, and follow up on issues related to climate change, local productions and trade, whether international, regional or among these countries.”

The observatory, he said, will provide accurate analysis supported by artificial intelligence that will enable policy and strategy makers in these countries to redraw policies and strategies to address food security challenges.

Waer added that “the food security crisis is global and requires a global solution, but there are peculiarities that differ from one region to another, and therefore solutions always start with sub-regional initiatives; this initiative began with four countries, and we hope that the rest of the Arab countries will join and expand it.”
