AMMAN — Jordan, in partnership with the EU, on Monday chaired the third Union for the Mediterranean Ministerial Meeting on Energy, which was virtually held in Lisbon, and discussed means to enhance cooperation in natural gas, electricity, renewable energy and energy rationalisation.

Energy Minister Hala Zawati, who chaired the meeting for the eastern and southern countries of the Mediterranean, expressed hope for the declaration of the meeting to form a main stimulator for further cooperation among member states, according to a ministry statement.

Zawati also highlighted the importance of the declaration in expanding energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy, in addition to enhancing cooperation in exchanging power and stable provision of natural gas across the northern and southern areas of the Mediterranean.

She also called for seeking new means to address the environment and climate change issues, urging participants to speed up legislation and infrastructure procedures necessary to facilitate power connectivity among member states of the union.

The minister added that Jordan has always been a supporter of cooperation in all fields among member states.

Nasser Kamel, secretary general of the Union for the Mediterranean, said that the union is aware of the urgent challenges in the energy field in the region and the need to enhance cooperation in addressing them.

Portuguese Minister for the Environment and Climate Action João Pedro Matos Fernandes highlighted the importance of the meeting in discussing common challenges in the fields of renewable energy and energy rationalisation.
