Meta: "From the river to the sea" slogan does not violate content policies

Meta's Oversight Board announced on Wednesday that the slogan "From the river to the sea," often used by pro-Palestinian supporters, does not violate the company's content policies.

The board clarified that this phrase does not breach Meta’s rules on hate speech or violence. It noted that the slogan has various meanings and is employed in different contexts, making it difficult to categorize as hate speech or incitement to violence.

After reviewing three Facebook posts containing the phrase, amid the Israeli Occupation aggression on Gaza and global protests, the board concluded that the content did not violate Meta’s policies and did not warrant removal.

The board stated that the slogan "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" in isolation does not advocate violence or exclusion but reflects support for Palestinian rights, self-determination, and equality.

Meta’s decision to allow the content, the board said, acknowledges the complex meanings behind the slogan, despite accusations from the Israeli Occupation that it calls for its violent destruction.
