AMMAN — A 22-year-old police officer who was shot last week, allegedly by a member of a mob that attacked a police station in Muwaqqar, succumbed to his wounds on Sunday, official sources said.

 

Second Lt. Abdullah Daajah of the Badia Police Forces was one of three officers at the Muwaqqar police headquarters when the station was attacked by around 500 people last Wednesday.

 

“Daajah received a bullet in the thigh while attempting to defend the police station, and the mob that attacked the station prevented a Civil Defence Department (CDD) ambulance from reaching the area to rescue him,” Public Security Department (PSD) Spokesperson Lt. Col. Mohammad Khatib said.

 

Daajah bled heavily and by the time CDD rescue teams reached him, he had already lost a large amount of blood, Khatib told The Jordan Times.

 

“We have collected 50 blood units since he was shot but it was not enough and unfortunately he died on Sunday at the hospital,” he added.

 

Daajah, a recent graduate of Mutah University, joined the Badia Police Forces in June and was assigned to a police station in Muwaqqar.

 

PSD Director General Gen. Hussein Majali told reporters last week that the group which attacked the station were relatives of members of an armed “evil gang” that was arrested by police forces following an exchange of fire in the Kamaliyah area in Sweileh on Tuesday.

 

One person from the Khreishah family was also killed in the attack against the Muwaqqar police station on Tuesday.

 

Police headquarters and three police vehicles were destroyed in the clashes in Muwaqqar, which involved heavy exchange of fire, Majali added.

 

Meanwhile, the Daajah tribe, which mainly resides in east Amman, issued a statement condemning the crime and calling on authorities to reveal the facts about the incidents and the identities of perpetrators, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
