Egypt announces Presidential Elections schedule for 2024

Roya News

The National Elections Authority in Egypt announced Monday the timetable for the presidential elections scheduled for 2024 and called on voters to participate.

According to this schedule, the Egyptian presidential elections will be held over three days on Dec. 10, 11, and 12.

The timetable encompasses all procedures and dates related to the electoral process, starting from issuing the call for voters to the elections and culminating in the final results announcement under the responsibility of the National Elections Authority.

Notably, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has approved a proposal by the National Dialogue Trustees Council to study a legislative amendment to the law governing the National Elections Authority. This amendment aims to enable full judicial supervision of the upcoming presidential elections in 2024.

With this amendment, Egyptians will have the opportunity to choose a president to lead the country for a term of six years in the coming year.

While Sisi, who has been in power since 2014, has not yet announced his intention to run for a third term, analysts consider it highly likely.

Observers believe that advancing the date of the presidential elections is linked to stringent economic measures that the Egyptian authorities may need to take early next year to address the economic crisis, especially the issue of external debt (USD 165 billion) that needs to be repaid in the coming months, at a time when there is a shortage of foreign exchange.

Egyptians are already grappling with a decline in their purchasing power, with inflation reaching a new record high in August, at nearly 40 percent.
