Jordan to boost gas production after major discovery

Roya News

Jordan's energy sector revealed that a development plan is underway to increase gas production at the Risha field in eastern Jordan.

Recent studies indicate the presence of 9.4 trillion cubic feet of gas, suggesting substantial commercial potential.

The discovered gas reserves, spread over 3,400 square kilometers or 40% of the Risha field, are expected to help Jordan achieve self-sufficiency in natural gas by 2030. If fully extracted, these reserves could meet the country’s gas needs for the next 80 years.

Currently, the Risha field produces about 45 million cubic feet of gas per day, with 20 million cubic feet being used for electricity generation. The rest remains untapped due to limited buyers.

To diversify its customer base, the National Petroleum Company has signed agreements with three local firms to transport gas to industrial facilities, aiming to start deliveries to factories in Amman by the end of this year.
