Safadi discusses means to counter Israeli annexation plan with Norwegian, Danish FMs

The Jordan Times

AMMAN — Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Monday reviewed means to deter Israel from annexing occupied Palestinian territories in separate conversations with the foreign ministers of Norway and Denmark.

In a telephone call with his Norwegian counterpart Ine Marie Eriksen Søreide, Safadi warned that annexation of Palestinian land would “kill” the two-state solution and undermine opportunities to realise permanent and comprehensive peace, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

The two ministers covered means of joint action to create a “real horizon” to achieve peace through serious, effective and direct negotiations based on international law.

They also reviewed preparations for a meeting of the Norway-headed communications committee on supporting the Palestinian economy, which will be held virtually on June 2.

In this regard, Safadi highlighted the importance of reaching “clear stances” rejecting the annexation and warning against its repercussions, as well as supporting the two-state solution as the only means to end the conflict.

Safadi also discussed the issue of Israeli annexation with his Danish counterpart Jeppe Kofod over the phone as part of Jordan’s efforts to reach a global position against Israeli measures to annex settlements, the Jordan Valley and the northern Dead Sea area in occupied Palestine.

The two top diplomats went over international stances regarding the Israeli annexation of Palestinian lands, mainly the European position rejecting any such moves and warning against their repercussions.

Safadi and Kofod also highlighted the “deep-rooted” Jordanian-Danish relations and the continuous coordination and consultation over regional developments, including financial issues related to securing the necessary funding to meet refugees’ needs.

Meanwhile, Safadi and the two ministers stressed the significance of solidarity and cooperation in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and its repercussions.
