Labour ministry launches market information system

AMMAN — The Ministry of Labour has unveiled the Labour Market Information System after concluding its pilot phase, marking a step towards strengthening evidence-based employment policies and long-term workforce planning.

Announced on Thursday, the platform is intended to serve as a “central reference for understanding labour market dynamics in Jordan,” according to a ministry statement sent to The Jordan Times.

By providing updated and detailed data, the system seeks to support policymakers in aligning labour supply with market demand, while offering insights into employment trends and emerging professions.

The ministry said: “The platform is built around indicators classified according to international standards, allowing for more accurate analysis of the current situation and future projections.”

Ministry spokesperson Mohammad Zeiod described the system as “a national strategic initiative with a 10-year horizon,” stressing that it will undergo continuous development to reflect economic shifts and labour market changes.

“The transition to full implementation came after a trial period aimed at collecting user feedback and enhancing the system’s performance and usability,” he noted.

Accessible in both Arabic and English through the ministry’s website, the platform is designed to involve the private sector as a key partner in analysing employment needs.

By consolidating data from multiple public institutions, including the Department of Statistics, the Social Security Corporation and education and training entities, the system offers a comprehensive database that can guide skills development, and employment.

From the perspective of workers, the availability of reliable labour market data is seen as increasingly important.

“Knowing which sectors are expanding and what qualifications employers are looking for helps jobseekers plan their careers more realistically,” said Nada Ali, a young professional searching for her second job.

“Access to this information makes career choices more informed,” Ali added.

Employers also view the system as a “valuable” planning tool.

Samer Badran, a human resources manager at a pharmaceutical firm, said that accurate labour market data can improve business decision-making.

“When we understand market trends and potential skill gaps, we can adjust our recruitment plans and invest in targeted training,” he said.

The Labour Market Information System was developed with support from the International Labour Organisation and the German Agency for International Cooperation, in collaboration with several national entities and research centres.

The ministry said that it is working closely with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship to ensure robust cybersecurity measures and data protection.
