AMMAN — Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Secretary-General Amani Azzam on Thursday launched the “She Leads: Empowerment, Vision, and Progress in the Future of Women in Jordan’s Energy Sector” workshop.
The event was held as part of the Jordanian-German Energy Partnership, in cooperation with the German Energy Agency (dena) and the EDAMA Association for Energy, Water and Environment.
In her opening remarks, Azzam expressed appreciation to EDAMA and the German partners, noting that the workshop underscores the urgent need to shed light on the realities facing women in the energy sector and explore pathways to empower them as influencers and decision-makers shaping the sector’s future.
She highlighted Jordan’s tangible progress in developing its energy sector and voiced optimism regarding supportive frameworks such as the Investment Environment Law, which offers incentives for projects creating job opportunities for women and youth.
She also cited the Economic Modernisation Vision, which aims to double the female employment rate in Jordan by 2033.
Azzam also acknowledged ongoing challenges in the daily work environment, including disparities in knowledge-sharing, limited assignment of skill-building responsibilities to women and the underrepresentation of women in leadership roles.
“This workshop and others like it offer a platform for dialogue and a space for action,” she said. “They are essential in identifying key challenges and paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable energy sector led by all segments of society.”
Vice Chairman and member of EDAMA Samer Judeh stressed that the underrepresentation of women is an issue across multiple sectors in Jordan, attributing this in part to societal attitudes and inadequate public transportation, particularly for women living outside urban centres.
Judeh also stressed the importance of enabling qualified women to assume leadership roles and underscored the collective responsibility of society to invest in the vast expertise and capabilities of Jordanian women.
The workshop featured several specialised presentations and interactive sessions led by women from public and private institutions as well as civil society organisations.
Participants shared their personal experiences in the energy sector and discussed challenges and opportunities in advancing women’s roles in the industry.
