Jordan condemns Israel’s demolition of UNRWA buildings in Jerusalem

The Jordan Times

AMMAN — The Foreign Ministry on Tuesday denounced the demolition by Israeli occupation police of buildings inside a compound of UNRWA in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood of occupied Jerusalem, describing the move as a “dangerous escalation and a flagrant breach of international law.”

The ministry said in a statement that the action constituted a violation of the privileges and immunities of UN organisations.

Spokesperson Fouad Majali reaffirmed the Kingdom’s rejection and condemnation of what he described as an illegal and illegitimate act, as well as Israel’s ongoing, systematic campaign as an occupying power targeting UNRWA, its presence, and its vital activities.

Majali stressed that UNRWA services cannot be cancelled or replaced, noting that the agency operates under a UN mandate to provide vital assistance to Palestinian refugees across its five fields of operation.

He said the Israeli measures were intended to undermine UNRWA and its symbolic role in affirming the right of Palestinian refugees to return and to compensation under international law, in what he described as a clear attempt to deprive the Palestinian people of essential rights and services endorsed by the international community and relevant UN resolutions, particularly Resolution 194.

The spokesperson warned of the consequences of continued illegal Israeli actions against UNRWA and its institutions, urging the international community to assume its legal and moral responsibilities, confront measures targeting the agency, and ensure the political and financial support required for UNRWA to continue delivering its vital services to Palestinian refugees.
