AMMAN — Prime Minister Jafar Hassan on Tuesday said the government is moving forward, in line with directives from His Majesty King Abdullah, with a comprehensive development programme to support Zarqa Governorate.
Hassan said the government’s three-year executive plan allocates around JD500 million for projects across key sectors, particularly health, education and public transport, according to a Prime Ministry statement.
He noted that the programme includes several strategic projects, especially in the transport sector, including plans to extend the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service to the Hashemite University.
The prime minister said that a new public transport terminal with a capacity of up to 1,250 buses will be developed, while studies on upgrading the Jordan Hejaz Railway and assessing its potential use for public transport are nearing completion.
In the health sector, Hassan said the cardiac surgery department at Zarqa New Hospital has been expanded, while work is underway to establish a comprehensive health centre at the site of the old hospital.
He also said that construction of a new building for Prince Faisal Hospital will begin soon, at a cost of JD9 million.
On the education front, the prime minister said around 500 classrooms will be added across Zarqa’s schools over the current and coming academic years.
He added that four model schools, each with a capacity of 1,000 students, will be established in partnership with the private sector and are expected to be completed by the next academic year.
Hassan also noted that the government is addressing urban challenges across several municipalities, particularly in Russeifa, while working to strengthen its development role through environmental, tourism and industrial projects.
These efforts, he said, aim to advance sustainable development, in line with planned initiatives in the Azraq area.
Hassan’s remarks came during a visit by His Majesty King Abdullah to Zarqa Governorate, where the King met with notables and representatives of the local community at the Hashemite University.
